The following images are taken from one
specific application, that of comingled pathology reports. This
first image is a search screen, where a user can search on non-sensitive
information to retrieve a list of cases which match. Source and
derivative fields are separated, and since the derivative classification
is structured, it is possible in many cases to present the user with a
dropdown box of choices. In this example, the user can select cases
where metastatic carcinoma is present or absent. Derivative fields
make for better searches, since a pathologist may state: "No
carcinoma observed", and a search on the word "carcinoma" in the
diagnosis would find the case. The derivative diagnosis only
contains the word carcinoma if it is present; this is part of the
derivative process. Finally, if multiple selections are made in the
search, only the cases which satisfy all criteria are returned.
